In the course of building our house last month, we had to stay in a hotel for a couple of days while our contractor sprayed foam insulation on our ceiling. Hotels are always kind of an adventure, and we were all looking forward to a little pampering and a warm night’s sleep, especially with the temperatures dropping so low at night this time of year.
I’ve fictionalized the characters and locations in this story, and also added a few embellishments of my own to some of the events. Beyond that, this story is pretty much how things actually went down for our family that weekend. If this story were to ever get made into a big Hollywood movie, the title on the poster would likely be followed by a line of parentheses telling the viewer (Based on actual events.)
This story wasn’t the one I had in mind for this week. On Monday and Tuesday, I had brainstormed a few ideas for a different story. But as the week went on and I got to the airport for another trip to New Jersey on Wednesday, the words of my son came back to me from that hotel trip: “Dad, this would make a really great story.” By the time I got to my hotel Wednesday night, I had penned a twelve page rough draft. I spent Thursday and Friday typing up the rewrite, worked on edits Saturday morning, et voila!
Enjoy!
